Baukjen
Baukjen is a family-run, ethical and sustainably conscious womenswear brand. We particularly love their elegant dresses and blouses, with stunning new styles each season. The company's mission is to put people and planet at the heart of everything they do – through responsible practices, recycling of garments and fabrics, and by creating a more ethical supply chain. Baukjen is a certified B Corp.
In 2021, Baukjen was awarded the accolade of “Best Progress Toward Circularity” by Marie Claire, and the label has also won a United Nations Global Climate Action Award. The brand has been worn by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Alexa Chung.
Founders
The company was founded by husband and wife team Geoff van Sonsbeeck and Baukjen de Swaan Arons, who share a passion for slow fashion that puts people and planet first.
“We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of clothing and we are proud to be a circular, carbon negative and zero-waste business.”
Materials
For their romantic, wistful collections, Baukjen experiments with innovative materials such as recycled eco-viscose, hemp, and ECOVERO – a cellulose fibre made from wood pulp. The company is also a big user of organic cotton, linen and Tencel, as well as upcycled fabrics. We're big fans of their staples, such as Baukjen's ethical jeans and t-shirts.
People
Baukjen is a living-wage employer. They regularly engage in conversation with suppliers and endeavour to visit their factories periodically to ensure ethical working conditions. Human rights are also safeguarded in their Code of Conduct, which suppliers must sign before beginning to work with Baukjen.
Production
Baukjen's clothing is produced in Portugal, Bulgaria, and Romania. The company is dedicated to offsetting its emissions.
Packaging
The company uses only plastic-free packaging that's also 100% recyclable and primarily made from already recycled materials. Responsible sourcing of packaging is also important to the company, which encourages either recycling or re-use of their packaging. In order to make the packaging biodegradable, the company has replaced the sticky tear strip on the boxes with a cardboard one – as a result, the packaging can now be composted at home.
Animals
Baukjen offers a large selection of vegan items, including many beautiful vegan dresses and blouses, and clearly labels them as such. We only sell their vegan items at Immaculate Vegan.
