Featured in VOGUE and InStyle magazines, Canussa has been celebrated for responsible consumption – all their designs are crafted using materials that are not just respectful to the environment but also highly durable, guaranteeing a long life.

Canussa's four key values are respect, quality, transparency and honesty. The ethos of the brand is ‘Designed with purpose’ and their mission is to create stylish, practical and long-lasting fashion, respecting people, anmals and the planet.

About the Founder

Canussa's founder Maria Cano comes from a background in engineering and information science – harnessing her experience in these industries, she has poured her heart into creating a business with a positive impact. Her engineering mentality is present in every single product detail, helping to make the end result practical, versatile and durable.

“To us, resistance is very important: if a product is not durable, it cannot be sustainable and will generate much more waste in the course of time.”

Materials

The fabrics used by Canussa are highly resistant, with constant attention to sustainability – materials are recycled or recyclable where possible. The brand opts for high-quality materials to prolong lifespan and reduce overall consumption. Their up-cycled textile is RGS-approved and their exterior fabric holds an OEKO-TEX certification. Limiting the amount of waste produced and recycling what cannot be salvaged is part of their sustainable process: Canussa aims to be a 100% circular brand.

Canussa’s current choice of vegan leather is a microfibre – a highly resistant product that will stand the test of time. The brand is also experimenting with recycled microfibre and corn.

People

Every operation involved with Canussa shares the brand's ethical and environmental values, including suppliers and distribution channels.  The brand produces their designs in Spain, which has some of the best leather artisans in the world – but many workshops are disappearing as the country struggles with unemployment, so Canussa is dedicated to creating jobs and improving the local economy.

By producing locally in Spain, the brand can ensure responsible production by working closely with artisans. They are also committed to ensuring workers a right to minimum wages, holidays, sick leave, and a safe working environment – all made possible by production in Spain, as these rights are unfortunately still unavailable to many workers in some Asian countries, where a lot of fashion manufacturing takes place.

Production

The entire production takes place in Spain, and the brand works to reduce their carbon footprint – as part of this, they plant one tree for each product sold, in collaboration with Onetreeplanted.org.

Packaging

Canussa believes in keeping packaging to a minimum and using biodegradable, recycled materials where possible, hailing from local providers. They currently use biodegradable labels made from algae and recycled paper, ship their shoes in reusable, recycled cotton bags made in Spain, and recycled cardboard boxes.

Animals

Now a PETA-Approved Vegan brand, Canussa started out making leather accessories. But after immersing herself in topics around sustainability, Maria recognised it was a contradiction to use animal leather as a sustainable brand. “Of course being vegan does not mean being sustainable,” says Maria.”But somehow I cannot see being sustainable without being vegan. I can now see the animal cruelty behind the food industry and I decided not to be part of that chain.” All the materials and components of Canussa's designs are now vegan.
